Recognizing Dax

Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax, who is among the top canines in the nation and has received dozens of awards, has retired due to injuries he suffered during a suspect apprehension.

.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced the retirement of Dax Thursday morning.

.

Dax joined the sheriff’s office in the spring of 2015. He was 13 months old when he joined the team.

“As the Lake County community has followed over the years, K9 Dax has thrived in his role as a police canine,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.

.

Dax and his handler, Deputy John Forlenza, have located over 400 missing endangered people or fleeing felons.

.

Covelli said the canine has recovered hundreds of kilos of illegal drugs, assisted with the seizure of millions of dollars, recovered dozens of firearms discarded by offenders, assisted with dozens of seized vehicles and has participated in hundreds of community and school demonstrations.

.

Dax’s spine and neck were severely injured during the apprehension of a suspect which resulted in temporary paralysis in his hindquarters.

.

He was later diagnosed with cervical and thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) and lumbosacral IVDD which was worsened by his altercation on March 3.

.

Dax and Deputy Forlenza were honored at the last North Shore ASIS Law Enforcement Appreciation Night.
